Search Engine Optimisation has been around pretty much as long as the search engines themselves. The earliest form of SEO was discovered by the late, great father of link-building Eric Ward (AKA: Link Moses) back in 1992, since then the search engines (namely Google) have become extremely clever utilising a multitude of algorithms to better understand web content, interactions and so much more to better understand where to place you within their SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).
SEO is still by far the most cost effect means of increasing footfall to your website however it will come at a small cost prior to seeing any great returns, this is simply because it will take a minimum of 6 months before you really start to see the hard work pay off. Other than Blackhat techniques which will likely have your website penalised or worse still de-indexed from the search engines altogether, there is no quick fix in getting your website to the top of the search engines for your major keyword variants. It is possible however to get noncompetitive longer tail phrases onto the first page within hours which can be of benefit when combining SEO with other forms of online advertising campaigns.
As the internet, search engines, social networks… have evolved so too has SEO, the biggest misconception today is that SEO is purely about link-building by creating good quality links and creating great content and yes in part this is still true in that quality links and content will certainly benefit your rankings, but in all fairness it is impossible to add a link on an authoritative and quality website as all of these types of websites will not allow you to simply add a link back to you, so we have to create a link earning strategy. In order to do this we have to combine, integrate and optimise all that we do on the internet from our websites to our social media and even our paid advertising activity.
Creating quality, unique and useful content is a sure way to help improve your rankings but what many forget is that content comes in many forms other than written there are videos, podcasts, infographics and a whole lot more.
